Thank You Gateway…
Talk - Audio Drivers
I would like to thank Gateway for making it so hard just to have some f*cken audio on my laptop. About several weeks ago i purchased a Gateway Notebook MX 6455 for school purposes, well that same day i messed up the partitions while trying to install Ubuntu and erased Windows….yeah tell me about it.
So I reinstalled Windows with the recovery disk that came with it, and everything went fine until I figured out I was not hearing that “beautiful” Windows XP welcome sound (i knew something was missing from the windows experience). Then, I went to Gateway site and went to download the drivers and was downloading them and they kept saying FAILURE. I then figured out, after thoughtless hours, that I had to install the realtek audio drivers first. So I did that, then went back to install Gateway’s drivers and to my surprise….audio still did not work. So I ordered the Recovery Disk (an updated one) and the nice support person gave it to me for free, which arrived later on. And still they did not work, so I was about to sell this computer away until I did another google search for good luck.
I searched for who knows what and i came across this website, notebookreview.com . Where i was leaded to this topic , which the author sounded exactly like me.
For people having the same audio problem (Conexant Ac-Link Audio Drivers, Realtek) here is the fix.
“1. Install Realtek Audio driver (WDM_A380 or WDM_A381, doesn’t matter).
2. Reboot
3. Download and try to install the Conexant AC 97 audio driver. You can get the one from Gateway (D00245-001-001 driver), or any other manufacturer that uses this chip in the notebook. Pay attention to where it stores the files. For instance the Gateway driver uncompresses to c:\cabs\directory name.
4. Go to device manager, find the Realtek AC 97 audio item under “Sound, video, and game controllers”. Right click on it and select UPDATE DRIVER
5. Select NO if it asks to connect to Windows Update, click NEXT
6. Select “Install from a list of specific location” and click NEXT
7. Select “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click NEXT
8. DE-select “Show compatible Hardware”. CONEXANT should show up under manufacturer since you tried to install the driver earlier.
9. Click on CONEXANT on the left, then select “Conexant AC-Link Audio” on the right and click NEXTThe driver will install. It may ask you for the location of some files, point it to the directory the Conexant driver uncompressed to in step 3.
Reboot, and you should have working audio!”
If you have amd64 bit processor you can visit planetamd64.com , they have most common drivers for windows64 and vista.
…Thank you! I spent countless hours without sleep because of this thing. This is the last time I purchase a Gateway product. Anyways, thanks for the fix.
Thanks
This worked perfectly.
Thhanks – sure did help as gateway will not return calls, etc UNless you use the “you pay” phone line. There response was “We’ll send you a disck which will wipe out you computer and guarantee that maybe it will actually work about 90% of the time” Last time I wll ever buy a gateway!!!
I tried doing this and then when I was installing, my computer froze and when I restarted, it crashed.I still have no audio. Any advice?
Thank you thank you thank you. I hate buying computers but how can you build a laptop for $480 so I caved and bought a cheap gateway at best buy and got it home. Check for dead pixels and all and it seemed fine and I figured I should do a fresh windows install and eliminate all the crap. Stupidly I said ohh come on I’ve built dozens of computers recovery partitions are a waste of space… press L to delete? duh…. bad idea I find out that the disc that came with my new MX6422 didn’t have any drivers on it and I’d unwittingly sent myself on a 12 hour torture trying to get drivers back onto my dear lappy 486. I finally get most drivers working by getting drivers for different model laptops from gateway’s website because the mx6422 has almost no drivers on its own page. Thankfully I just grabbed some from the similar mx6442 and some from the ms6400 series and they worked except for the audio and the stupid 56k modem but I didn’t care about that and still don’t. If it wasn’t for some non stop google searching and a lucky string of text to find your blog I would have probably spent the next week working on getting my drivers working, but come on why should I have to install drivers to make my sound card think it is a different one then tell it it is wrong and that it was the original one that it wouldn’t accept drivers for all along until I confused it. How stupid is that. I pity anyone that doesn’t have years of computer building experience and lots of luck with google to get that working. So thank you a lot. Someone should mention to gateway that they are sending people on a wild goose chase and should probably update their website with your findings…. or just write a nice installer to do it all for you.
I just got the MX6422 yesterday. Used the online chat help on Gateway’s support site… the guy was very helpful. I just downloaded the audio driver from the site, tried installing it, and then selecting it with the “Don’t Search – I will specify” option as stated above. It showed up under the Sound settings and it installed without issue. I had sound after a reboot.
THANK YOU!! I never thought I would solve the damn problem on my MX6455. Who would’ve thought it had such an easy fix? lol. Thanks again
I had this exact same problem with the MX6445 Model. I followed all of the steps listed, but used the gateway driver download for the MX6445. It didn’t work. I had to manually find the driver for the MX6455. When I tried the process with the driver for the MX6455, it worked. lol Great job gateway. lol
GRACIAS!!!!!
Thanks for your help, it works, I am from Bolivia and anybody here knows how to repair this machine.
Thank again

The above link worked on my MX6445 laptop
OMG! Thanks to this site, and thanks to Gokul for the above link. I spent so much time with this, and with Gateway support. It works great now. I have the MX6445.
I cannot find the D00245-001-001.exe
Could somebody help me please..
Audra, use the above link from Gokul. You have to go through some hoops to register with that site, but it will work. I got mine working with it. I could not find that driver on Gateways site either, you have to go to that link
I have a package of drivers that i found on this guys website for this audio card and it installs and works fine with a fresh install of XP Pro if any wants the install package that works email me, Peace.
Please send me the driver package you have for win XP pro, I can’t get any sound out of this customers Gateway junk laptop!
Thanks and happy holidays
freday2005@gmail.com
or go here http://billy.pl3x.net/gatewaymx6425/windows_drivers/audio/
and download all of these files to the same directory and run the setup, apparently the mx6425 drivers are the right ones.
I used the link that Gokul provided (http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=648316) when reinstalling XP pro on a friends MX6422 lappy. I could not get any of the other stuff to work, but that ATI Southbridge driver worked perfectly.
THANKS! I was wasting hours on trying to get this damn driver working.
I wonder if this is who I think this is…
Glad it help some of you, I recently did a tri-boot on the same laptop and wish it was THIS easy for x64 windows and vista.
When i get to step 9 it says it canot continue
Really appreciate the notice. You saved me from hours of fustration. Great job. Again Thanks.
this was some straight bullshit…..
Thank you very much
i have the same problem with mx6436 gateway notebook, i have been trying to get sound for the past two weeks with no avail, can anyone help, i am on mu last straws
Thanks Thanks Thanks…Whoooooo Hoooooo!!!
I have been working on this problem for 5 months now, and nothing, finally it works… now if only I could get the Network Drivers working.
Really dont believe that gateway have not created a solution to this problem, because up to the date of this message the were still giving me the problem audio drivers, and the Techies apparently were either not supplied with previous info or did not cate to properly review it, cause if they did they would not be giving me the same problem drivers all the time.
Hi,
I purchased this for my girlfriend and the laptop itself has been great. The only problem we keep running into is that she losses the wireless signal at least once a day. Sometime we can connect to the wireless router immediately, but most of the time it just gives us a message that there are no wireless signals in the area. Then the next day it just works fine. If anyone out there has encountered this and can offer some help, please email. I would greatly appreciate it.
Best regards,
Jason
THe MX6445is a total POS, finding the right driver for media center on this is a joke. I have spent 5 hours on this and none of the links provided work. Thank you gateway for a total piece of trash and thank you BBY for selling this total POS so I have to serice it. Anyone have any new links?
Thank you Gokul. It really works.I have mx6445.But this is the real that Gateway sucks….
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
hello man, thanks for helped me, i spent my time with this thing, but i`m happy now. anything contact me ok . see you later
I purchased a desktop Gateway GT5238E and I have installed the drivers suggested by gateway. I got Audio after I sgut down the computer, unplugged it, pressed in ther power button for 30 sec, and then wait 3 minutes before plugging it in. I got sound. Wow it worked. Then after I shut down the computer for the night; the very next morning I turned it on and no sound. Contacted Gateway and was told to reinstall everything and repeat the proceedure all over again. did it and got sound. Wow it worked. I turned off the computer and the very next morning I turned it on and guess what, NO SOUND again. So i have decided to pack it up and take it back to Bestbuy after Gateway stated they will send me a label to ship it to them for repair. I’ve had the computer for 5 days and it already needs repairing. I’ll take it back, and I will never buy another Gateway. I am getting an Apple. At least they have better customer service and when you buy an Apple or a Sony Vaio like the one I had, they worked without these types of issues. I regret in selling my Vaio in order to upgrade to an Intel computer. Best buy only sells HP’s Gateways, and Emachines (gateway product) and Aple computers. The HP’s are crappy and cheapy built machines, and the best of all the computers Bestbuy sells today is Apple. ‘ll stick to Apple for here on out or I’ll shop elsewhere for another Sony Vaio.
Bye Bye Gateway, and I hope your company sinks to the bottom of some bottomless pit that you can’t crawal out from ever again.
Thank you all for the help on the audio I am working on a MX6442 withe same issues. Chatted with Gateways tech guys, the long and short of the story,
very little help to locate the driver except shipping me a cd. They did identify the chipset makers or similar boards. MX6442 has a BladeK8 RS482M booard where MSI they have the same chipset and devices. (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=696&kind=1)
Link for driver.
the Only thing is the modem. I have not gotten any to work from the site suggested from them but there are quite a few. This is the site for the manufacturer of the modem. (http://www.c-com.com.tw/support/c-com-support.htm).
Did some serious speed reading and I got the one that works. Guess where (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-39242-1)
There are a few companys that use similar software
that work with other chipsets and devices. 47hrs online. Longest time for one bloody driver.
Well thanks for the audio fix enjoy.
Oh force the driver to be recognised eg.
UPDATE DRIVER
.Select “Install from a list of specific location” and click NEXT
.Select “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click NEXT
. DE-select “Show compatible Hardware
enjoy
I have had the same problem as noah and the fact that it wont play sound. One even better the internet connection wont load.
Thanx m8!
I just got a compaq and had to reinstall windows. Of course the sound doesn’t work even after installing the various related sound drivers i found. This thread helped a lot. thnx.
Has anyone else encountered this after installing Vista Home Premium version on a new Gateway GT5238E compter?
I bought this at Best Buy in November with the intent of installing Vista when it came out in January. I went and bought the Home Premium version and after installing it, got no sound.
Evidentally a sound driver for this is not available yet! Anyone else have this issue?
thank you, everyone who owns a gateway owes you big
Thank you Gokul for the link.
thanks worked great. fucken gateway
hey thanks alot this is the best help ive got . i tried geting my sound back for 2 weeks . this shure did work ,great advice . Thank you soo much!
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/ac97-realtek-driver-vista.html use this site whoever installed vista and has no sound on there gateway notebook
Hey Tim H. I bought a Gateway GT5238E too and I was wondering if you could help me out with a problem I’m having with it. Send me an email to: DLS_62784@Hotmail.Com
Well I have given up on Gateway altogether. I decided to get an Apple iMac duo-core and have XP running on it as well as the Apple OS. Let me tell you something now. Apple builds their computers and creates the OS to work with them. I haven’t had a problem so far with Apple, and I do recommend them to those that actually want a working computer and not have to deal with these companies like Gateway, HP and others that use all these different parts from different companies and MS that tries and create an OS to work with all of the PC’s.
My Mac is doing great, looks great, and it Runs Windows XP and Vista as well.
Way to go Apple! Bye, bye Gateway and HP! no longer have a use for your cheapass, crappy products that can’t even work out of the box!
http://www.Apple.com click on store and buy, and you also get FREE shipping too.
Give Apple a try like I did, and you won’t regret it.
Well, even though I did get an Apple iMac and am very pleased with it. I did my research and decided to go with IBM/Lenovo product. the ThinkCentre M52 Series
http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=540950&N=265489&An=browse
I still want a PC to run my Windows, and I do like my Apple too, but IBM/Lenovo that comes with a 3 year onsite warranty, “toll-FREE” number to call, and when i did call IBM to speak to someone it took less than 5 minutes before speaking to a real person. Amazing in the difference between the Gateway, HP, Compaq, Emachine vs. IBM/Lenovo.
I can’t wait to get my comuter next week from Officedepot and get all mystuff installed on it.
I like the HT technology, the ability to upgrade to 4 gig of ram, and how quickly it was to get a real person to talk with at IBM/Lenovo.
Bye-bye Gateway, HP, Compaq, Emachine, and hello IBM/Lenovo.
Bought 2 gateway 1 weeks ago, both MX6445.
First did work fine without problem so far.
Second one won’t connect to internet. Cleaned registry as stated on a forum for same problem but haven’t work. reinstalled everything without success….. Comp is new and will need to get services….GJ Gateway
Did i just been double *** fucked?
You couldn’t have made this easier for me. I spent hours trying to figure this out. I really appreciate it.
“Fred on November 5th, 2006
or go here http://billy.pl3x.net/gatewaymx6425/windows_drivers/audio/
and download all of these files to the same directory and run the setup, apparently the mx6425 drivers are the right ones.”
Thankyou So much Fred! I finally got mine working with the driver you provided. Just clicked setup and it installed.
I have an MX6429.
I reinstalled windows without getting the drivers first (figuring I’d just get them from gateway).
Well the conexant driver they provided ( D00377-002-002.exe ) would not install — it always failed.
I tried to install manually, like others had done, but conexant never showed up in the list of manufacturer’s.
So anyways thanks so much FRED!!!!
=ODIN=,
I came across the same problem. I reformated my laptop neglecting the drivers because I thought Gateway would be reliable. The D00377-002-002.exe driver continually fails on me and I cannot find the older D00357-001-001.exe driver anywhere.
Any help would be appreciated.
I’m so frickin annoyed right now!!! Gateway keeps giving me and the guys @ Best Buy who’ve been working on my laptop the run around.
I can’t get my sound to work for anything…. true I don’t know anything about laptops, but I’ve downloaded everything and tried to get it to work and it won’t!!!
I have a MX6445 with Windows XP so please some one figure this stupid thing out!
I try to install the audio fo my gateway mx6422 after i have deleted the driver folder. I try to download the media controller for my notebook but all I get after installing is Faliure.
Audio problem
After formatting my notebook (Gateway MX6422) and installing windowxp OS,I could not get my audio back. I tried to download the audio driver for my notebook(i.e Conexant AC-link Audio D00377-002-002)but I get a faliure report when installing
Hi
I m really sit on my knees & say thnx to u for sharing this information…….
Thanks & Regards
Sharad
Hey guys, I was able to get the sound to work by using the vista driver (32 bit version anyways) on my windows xp pro that http://www.gateway.com offers for my mx6422 model. I have no problems with my sound and I think it is a better fix than the work around that you offer. Before the vista driver, I used the method that you present and it took me several hours to figure out but I was able to get it work
Gateway support is terrible I have been working on this problem now for over 5 hours thanks to the help above I was able to get sound but with so many attempts to get this working I screwed the computer up in other areas. I think I will reformat it(yikes) then try from scratch with the above methods.
Thanks guys for doing all the work in which that shotty company gateway should have done.
Thank you so much! I ran into this issue at a friend’s house on a Gateway MX6427. Everest Home said Sb400 Realtek AC97 audio, but when that was installed there was no sound! The Conexant 97drivers simply said “failed” when trying to install. Now it works, thanks to your help.
This worked perfectly when nothing else did! Thank you!
Thanks very much for the solution was fixen to through my laptop out when I came across this thanks a bunch.
On the gateway website select windows vista as your operating system. Ignore all warning messages then download sound driver

Install and the should fix your problem, it fixed mine
OMFG!! Finally somebody who understands how screwed up these laptops are… I really appreciate all the help guys, i was about 2 steps shy of throwing this thing through the wall. sound installed perfect with your suggestions.
Thank you so much!!! My hard drive died 15 months after purchase of this POS and I had to replace the hard drive and reinstall everything. It all worked but the audio. Gateways technical support is only good for people who can’t find the on switch. Your suggestions worked and I now have sound!!! Yippee!
For my MX6422 for winxp pro sp2 I installed driver from vista and it works. But I have the same problem with gateway MT6840. If somebody knows the solution please help !!
All I can say is Thanks alot. This pissed me off too!!! I will not buy a gateway & that’s for sure. I’ll stick with dell for now at least installing drivers is simple on their machines!! Whew!!!
Hello! I have some problem with my audio and i downloaded the AC97 but the driver i cant download the driver from gateway. Please help me i dont know what to do.
If anyone has a Gateway Notebook *(model MX6427 specifically) that they would like to sell because you cant get the sound to work, I would be interested in buying it as I have a need for a few more laptops and the sound card working is not an issue for me. I of course want everything else to work and the notebook to be in good condition otherwise. Yes, I am looking for a good price! But I will take the computer of your hands and can use it without the sound, so is anyone interested? Drop me an e-mail and put “Gateway MX6427″ in the subject line so your e-mail does not wind up with the spam and gets noticed. Also, tell me your location when you reply and what you asking for the notebook. Thanks for you attention.

Hi, Finally, This really works. I have the Gateway MX-6422,Running Windows XP Pro… Downloaded from Gateway’s Website, the Windows Vista Drivers (32bits) for Sounds, installed it. and, SOUNDS at last after about 4hrs of work, and I thought that I was good. Thanks, Eze

Paul: Nairobi,Kenya
i need to recover my MX6455, anyone know where i can get a recovery disk? i cant even get into windows, my notebook is not recognizing my HD
So, don’t know if you check this post anymore – you certainly got plenty of praise for it! Trying your suggestion now on the MX6455 (after GW kept me on hold forever, then wanted to charge $40 to tell me what actual sound hardware was in the POS), and hoping it works. Even if not, I see you’ve helped many others with the same problem, and for that, I say ~cheers~!
Thanks for some great info on these things!
holy f%^&&&* i have the mx6455 and my second hard drive just crashed. first time was under warranty so i just sent it in. this time on a clean install and rewriting zeroes to my entire hard drive as recommended by these gateway pricks i hve almost nothing. spent the past two weeks and have gotten my wireless and touchad, and sound working, but still can’t do the modem thing. have downloaded the driver for both it and the video(it too doesn’t work as it says someing about not having th right video decoder). does anywone know what this means? and how do i get the modem detected. not to mention the fact that i have hardly none of the programs that camw with my computer. no software for burning data cd’s, no more cyber link, fuck i didn’t even have a word processor anymore. ah, help, if not only the modem thing because i lie in the woods in a cabin w/ no power, where dial up IS ALL I CAN GET. randy
Thank ya’ love.
FUCK GATEWAY!!!!!!!!!!
AND AGAIN FUCK GATEWAY!!!!!!!!!!!
I try to install the conexant driver it fails and i go look to update the driver and conexant doesn’t appear in the list. Have rebooted and tried all of this several times…. HELP!!!
You are the best!!!
This fix didn’t work for me. However I found that you can install the drivers they have posted for vista and it works perfectly!
Hi, I just have a quick question. Where can I find this Conexant AC97 Audio Driver? I have been searching up and down the internet and can’t find it. My computer is also a Gateway MX6455, and I can’t find the D00245-001-001.exe file on the support section of the Gateway website. Any help at all would be great. Thank you for your time.
Thanks so much! I have the Gateway Notebook MX 6442 and I followed your instructions to the letter and now I’ve got my sound back (I lost it after I replaced the harddrive).
I’ve encountered the same problem.. than I looked into google and found the solution that you suggested… and it worked.. thanks a lot!

I have been experiencing this problem since redownloading Windows XP after a HD crash. Finally someone that has answers! I get the whole system sounds but nothing else. Tried everything else and received the whole ‘failure’ message for the audio driver. Does this process work for the MX6441? Or if not, anyone know the process for this one?
Thanks!

I don’t know how you found this information out, but thank goodness I finally hit the right Google search phrase to find this very, very useful post. I’ve been searching for the correct install for these driver’s for some bit and just like you stated in your post ‘Why the he(double toothpicks) is it so hard to have sound on a notebook when even the manufacturer doesn’t provide the proper driver install routine. Well again thanks for your great instructions and now I can hear all the Windows sounds I’ve been missing.
ThX!….

I still can’t get this to work. I’d love it if someone would email me personally and help me with this. I got to the install point and it said it wasn’t compatible due to Windows Logo test sign. Or something along those lines. Here is my email and please make the subject Gateway Help so I know what it is.

Hello,
I have the same problem as everyone on this site except I can not find the WMD 380 or WMD 381 drive. Can someone point me in the right direction?
thank you
Well I am not terribly advanced with getting things to work but I have a mx6436 gateway. The way I found to get sound to work was to download the files from gateway extract them. Then I went to device manager, found the device that wasn’t loaded (question mark with exclamation mark). “right click” and go to Properties. Click on Update Driver under the driver tab. Next choose Install from a specific list or location. At the next screen press the bottom tab “I will choose the driver to install.” Find the device driver type you are going to install and then hit next. Upon choosing this you will be prompted to choose a list of driver types. Be warned choose the correct driver or this will not work. Choose the have disk option and follow the prompts to the cabs file that it was downloaded into. Restart after install this should get your sound and everything else you need working.
THANK YOU!i tryed a lot of things and nothing worked,Gateway REALLY SUCKS.now they even came up with something thet if you want a suport over the phone you have to pay.but thanks to INFAMOUS i managed to fix the problem i have MX8530 and it worked but i downloaded a 377-02-01 driver after i instaled a realtec ac97.
